Cedar Park

Project Challenge:

Cedar Park represents one of four smaller projects, each combining to form the larger Cedar Street Axis development. This larger development was an attempt to link culture, learning and nature together. Cedar Park was designed to revitalize an end portion of this axis marked by the termination of highway U.S. 70 which ran through the middle of the town.

Design Solution:

The park is comprised of three main components, a pavilion, boardwalk and tower. The pavilion serves as the learning, art gallery and meeting center for town events and groups. The boardwalk provides a scenic extension into the marshland, providing both circulation and seating opportunities for users. Spots for resting and fishing are placed via "swells". The tower serves as the beacon for the site and allows for multi-level viewing of the surrounding nature and town.

Key Features:

  • Architecturally progressive in design. The pavilion acts as a horizontal representation of the tower and vice versa.

  • Use of wood structural members with poly-carbonate paneling. Represents both the town history of wood construction in boating with an inclusion of modern material.

  • The park elements are placed above the 1% flood zone and include several safety measure for rebound from hazardous natural events.
