The Steward Center

Project Challenge:

Located adjacent to the Kennesaw Mountain National park, in an open pasture surrounded by trees, The Steward Center is a responsive hospice aiming to adapt to patient needs and allow staff to serve as stewards to all guests transitioning in life. The floor plan was created to be highly functional for staff and experiential for patients and their loved ones. The plan is organized radially, with patient rooms located at the northern side, main amenity spaces on the southern side and staff and support spaces located throughout the center.

Design Solution:

The facility contains a total of 15 patient rooms. Each room is provided with private bathroom, closet, daybed and couch for use. A private patio area is placed at the front of each room with access to a communal walking path that hugs the building. The main amenity spaces include a garden, kitchen & dining, library, art gallery, chapel and rotunda. All of the spaces are easily accessible to patients regardless of their room location.

Key Features:

  • Radial Design

  • Use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) that doubles as structural component and aesthetic finish

  • Use of polycarbonate paneling to allow diffuse4d light into spaces.
